Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Leighton Green’

Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Leighton Green’ is a vigorous, fast-growing evergreen conifer renowned for its dense, rich green foliage and attractive pyramidal to columnar growth habit. It is one of the most popular cultivars of Leyland cypress, widely planted as a privacy screen, windbreak, hedge, or specimen tree because of its rapid growth and year-round ornamental appeal.

This cultivar can grow 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) per year under favourable conditions and may reach 15–25 m in height if left unpruned. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs best in fertile, moist, well-drained soils, although it adapts to a wide range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant and can tolerate coastal conditions and moderate air pollution.

‘Leighton Green’ requires regular pruning when grown as a hedge to maintain a dense, neat shape and prevent excessive size. Its soft, flattened sprays of dark green foliage provide excellent year-round colour and habitat for birds. It is relatively low-maintenance and resistant to many environmental stresses, making it a reliable choice for residential gardens, parks, commercial landscapes, and shelterbelt plantings.
