Black currant (Ribes nigrum) is a hardy, deciduous shrub grown for its highly nutritious, aromatic berries and ornamental value. The plant has an upright, bushy growth habit and typically reaches 1–2 m in height and spread, producing lobed, fragrant green leaves that turn yellow before falling in autumn.

In spring, black currant produces small, greenish-pink flowers in drooping clusters, which develop into glossy, deep purple to black berries during summer. The berries have a distinctive sweet-tart flavour and are exceptionally rich in vitamin C, anthocyanins, antioxidants, potassium, and dietary fibre. They are widely used to make jams, jellies, juices, syrups, cordials, wines, desserts, yoghurts, and baked products, and are also valued for their health-promoting properties.

Black currant grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It benefits from annual pruning to remove old stems, encourage new growth, improve air circulation, and increase fruit production. The shrub is cold-hardy, relatively easy to grow, and begins producing fruit within two to three years after planting.
